Furious Chapter 12 Devotional
No Other Way
đ Scripture Focus:
I do not treat the grace of God as meaningless. For if keeping the law could make us right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die.
(Galatians 2:21, NLT)
In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus fell to the ground in anguish and prayed a prayer that echoes through eternity: âFather, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will.â (Matthew 26:39)
In that moment, with the full weight of the cross looming before Him, Jesus asked for another way. He was not seeking to escape His missionâHe was acknowledging the cost and asking, if any other path to salvation existed, to be spared from the suffering ahead.
And yet, no alternative was given. Heaven was silent. The only answer was the road to Calvary.
If there had been another way for humanity to be savedâthrough the law, through personal righteousness, through religious devotionâthen the Father would have granted Jesusâ request. But the very fact that Jesus went to the cross is proof that nothing else could redeem us.
Thatâs exactly what Paul wanted the Galatians to understand. They were being lured into believing they needed to add the works of the law to their faith in Christ. But if righteousness could be earned through human effort, then the cross was unnecessary. Jesus would never have had to suffer and die. Yet, He didâbecause there was no other way.
đ„ Reflection
Do you sometimes live as if your performance earns Godâs approval? How does Jesusâ prayer in Gethsemane challenge the idea that thereâs another path to righteousness apart from the cross?
đ Prayer
Father, thank You for not sparing Your Son. Thank You for the grace that came at such a high cost. Help me never to treat it lightly. Let me rest fully in the finished work of Jesus and live every day in gratitude for the cross. Amen.
đŁ Call-to-Action
Spend time this week meditating on Jesusâ prayer in the garden. Let it remind you that the cross wasnât one wayâit was the only way. Reject every impulse to earn Godâs love, and instead, walk boldly in the grace that was purchased for you at the highest price.
